January 16 Update - Chinook snow depletion, late April spring conditions, snow is gone!

Sadly, what a difference 11 days make. The extended Chinook temperatures and warm winds have taken the snow away at Shaganappi which is a repeat of a few winters, unfortunately.

There is more grass than snow, and mainly only icy patches remain at Shaganappi at the moment. Shaganappi is best described as not skiable.

Both xc skiing and fat biking are not recommended.

The entrances to Shaganappi remain open, however there are many icy areas which means walking and fat biking are treacherous unless you are equipped with good grip designed for ice on the feet and good studded tires with low tire inflation pressures on the fat bike. (or only walk on grass and bare asphalt)

Long range forecast modelling is predicting a return to seasonal temperatures below zero after Wednesday. We are hoping the little patch of snow in the driving range remains for the free Chinook Blast xc ski lessons Jan 31/Feb 1. Keep your fingers crossed for a return to winter weather and more snow for Calgary!

SNO volunteers will monitor weather forecasts and once we have at least 10-15cm of snow on frozen ground at Shaganappi with a long range forecast of cold temperatures, volunteers will be back out machine packing down the snow on the xc ski trails, to once again try to compact a snow base to work with and build the trails upon.

Snowshoe packing will begin on the fat bike trails once there is a snow event at Shaganappi with cold temps forecasted for the long range.

Until the return of winter in Calgary enjoy the spring weather, be careful of ice in the parking lots and all around the Shaganappi Point golf course property as a whole. (more pictures from January 16th are below)
